idle thoughts…

Historical Melbourn

Melbourn, like so many other villages up and down the land, seems outwardly a modern bustling place to live but there are many historical sites that are unknown even to its own residents. There are connections with King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the riot by its citizens over the Ship Tax in 1640, the beginnings of the breakaway from the traditional church by the "dissenters", the sermon preached by John Bunyan in the parish churchyard (he was not allowed in the church) where tradition says that he was reported by a Melbourn man for preaching without a licence that resulted in his imprisonment but where he wrote "Pilgrim's Progress" and the visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1843 where the royal couple narrowly escaped injury when an elm tree branch fell across the road just after they had passed! There are even legends of Dick Turpin and Tom King the famous highwaymen whom is said planned many of their daring "hold ups" just outside the village.

The Melbourn History Group is very happy to arrange walks around the village pointing out places of interest. Contact Colin Limming on 01763 260072 for further details.

Melbourn Magazine

In this issue we have some interesting reports from the Village College, and two really gripping stories (p.30).  Their report shows that MVC is going from strength to strength, and the students have fun at the same time.

The Primary School also has a new Head Teacher; we welcome Mrs Jacqueline Bell-Cook to the community and look forward to getting to know her over the coming months.

We are fortunate to have a new Hall, All Saints’ Community Hall, which is already well used. (see p.41). A profile of Dr Avison of TTP, who opened the Hall, is on p.19. TTP are great benefactors to the village, and indeed are sponsors of the Melbourn Magazine.

The bad news is that we are in danger of losing our Library, which has been kept going by volunteers.  Unless alternative accom-modation is found very soon the Library may have to close, as the present building is unlikely to pass the next safety inspection.

Community Speedwatch in Villages

The police have been conducting trials in East Cambs that allow local residents to become involved in helping to reduce speed in their villages through identification of key sites, monitoring activity and passing details of vehicles seen speeding in their villages to the police.

Bring yourself up to speed by reading Vic Nickson's (NHW County Executive Member) report on the trial results.
