Well done Melbourn!Every year Cambridgeshire ACRE, an organisation that promotes rural life in the County, organises a competition for "Village of the Year" and "Community Building of the Year" as well as other awards. Last year Melbourn won "Enterprise in the Community" and this year we won through to the "Village of the Year" and "Community Building of the Year" Finals. The Presentation Dinner was held in St. Ives on 2nd September but although we were highly praised for both our entries we unfortunately did not win either Award. It was good to take part and we were very pleased that so many pictures of our village life such as the opening of the new Community Hall, the Village fete and other events were shown on the big screens in the Hall. The Melbourn History Group is already looking forward to next year's competition with the hope that we might achieve a first! Looking for family research, see Village History for more information. |

Recently I applied and was successful in transferring from a PCSO to that of a Police Officer. I start my training 08/12. This email will be my last as the local PCSO. I have been working out of Melbourn now for the past 19 months or so, orginally with Emma Garwood, more recently with Carl Fillary.
I have enjoyed my time here immensely, it has been a challenge however on the whole it has been a very rewarding experience. The skills I have learnt will serve me well in my new role.
Regards
Lee.

In this issue we have some interesting reports from the Village College, and two really gripping stories (p.30). Their report shows that MVC is going from strength to strength, and the students have fun at the same time. The Primary School also has a new Head Teacher; we welcome Mrs Jacqueline Bell-Cook to the community and look forward to getting to know her over the coming months. We are fortunate to have a new Hall, All Saints’ Community Hall, which is already well used. (see p.41). A profile of Dr Avison of TTP, who opened the Hall, is on p.19. TTP are great benefactors to the village, and indeed are sponsors of the Melbourn Magazine. The bad news is that we are in danger of losing our Library, which has been kept going by volunteers. Unless alternative accom-modation is found very soon the Library may have to close, as the present building is unlikely to pass the next safety inspection. Autumn 2008 Issue 55

In the six days of this month there have unfortunately been three burglaries from local businesses in the village of Shepreth. All of these have involved forced entries into the premesies. We are making patrols around these areas as a result, but may i remind all local businesses and residents to be especially vigilant at this time. To make sure doors are locked, any CCTV is switched on and alarms are set.

RMRG Melbourn project We are working towards getting more people involved with the river by starting a project in Melbourn in the new year. We have just received the necessary permissions from the Environment Agency to work in the river, so we are just about set to go. The first thing we need to do is clear some of the rubbish from the river in Melbourn, where it flows through the grounds of the Village College and the Recreation Ground. This we plan to do on Saturday 22nd November in conjunction with RiverCare, which is funded by Anglian Water. They will provide us with gloves, litter pickers etc. We plan to meet at the Pavilion on the Recreation Ground at 10.15am for a briefing and a cup of coffee before setting off to clear up the rubbish. Part of this meeting is to try and get some local interest from amoungst the Melbourn people – so please spread the word! Now for a couple of requests.... We would be very grateful for the loan/donation of any mugs that we can use to serve tea and coffee in Melbourn. Ideally, we would like a stock of these that we can dedicate for use on Melbourn work-party days. Second, we hope to have a tree at the Meldreth Christmas tree again this year, which takes place the last weekend of November. Does anyone have a white arteficial Christmas tree that they could loan us for this even? It would be back with you in time for Christmas! Please contact me if you can help with the tree or mugs.
